How do we compare to other islands in the US?

First of all, we are the biggest island in the US by population. If we were a city, we’d be second biggest, only trailing NYC by a few hundred thousand. We have the 11th biggest area for an island in the US, although most of the ones ahead of LI are remote Alaskan fishing islands. our biggest competition to be the best island nationwide is Puerto Rico and Hawai’i (Big Island). So, in this post, I am going to compare and contrast Hawai’i, Puerto Rico, Maui and Kodiak Island against Long Island.

Demographics- Pros: The good thing about having the biggest population of all these islands is the power. We could set up a more powerful army and higher government, if need, than all of these other islands. The closest is Puerto Rico, trailing about 3.4 million people behind. Maui, Hawai’i and Kodiak all have less than 300,000 residents. Taxes are also higher in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, due to their status in this nation.

Cons: Long Island is at risk of overcrowding. The South shore is being eroded away, and people move to LI for the American Dream, but with the influx of new families, people coming north from the South Shore and immigration, LI may need Quote laws. Also, since back in the day population=new state, we are big enough to become a state. We don’t need higher taxes though. Maui and Hawai’i will never overcrowd , Kodiak either.

Climate- Pros: 4 seasons. That’s the ideal US climate. Most people can deal with some snow and periods of sultry heat. People like when Summer doesn’t just flow into fall/spring and then to a hot summer again, similar to Puerto Rico. People also need some hot weather. Cold weather gets really annoying and dampens the mood of people. Kodiak is like that.

Cons: You never know what you are in for. You could be in for a terrible winter, like in December 20120, when 2 feet of snow fell and stranded everyone. Or you could be in for a winter like this past winter. Less than 6 inches of snow and mild. The springs and autumns are unpredictable. 80 in April. This past week, rained and 53 in the morning on Friday but by 4pm, it was 73 and very sunny. Puerto Rico is easy to predict. You most often always know what to wear, depending on if it’s the dry or wet season.

Food- Pros: You could eat all the Italian food you want. Or all the Seafood you want. sit at the beach and enjoy an ice-cold beer. There’s always some where to eat on Long Island. Villages always have either a Main St setting or a turnpike plaza setting. Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are plentiful. This comes along with neighborhood convenience stores. You are always within walking distance of a bagel store…and pizzerias. Yum. Kodiak? They probably have one pizzeria, where the pizza tastes not much better than the cardboard box it comes in. Hawai’i has  grills on the beach but what else will you find besides surf shops and gift shops.

Cons: There isn’t always entertainment where you eat. Maui and Hawai’i have plentiful eat and watch the fire show restaurants. You either just sit down and maybe watch the news at a pizzeria. Yu only eat at sit down restaurants past 5pm. The seafood may be limited to some crabs lobsters, and shellfish. Fishing is a controversy in around parts of the island. And remember…you may think you’re at a good pizzeria, but you may have come across one of the few bad ones.
